The city's administration has changed many times over the years. It was once managed by the Kuantan Sanitary Board from 1913 to 1937. It then became the Kuantan Town Board until 1953. Later, it functioned as the Kuantan Town Council and the Kuantan Municipal Council. On 21 February 2021, Sultan Abdullah declared it a full-fledged city. The local authority was then renamed the Kuantan City Council. The state administrative center moved from Kuala Lipis to Kuantan in 1955. This move was officiated by Sultan Abu Bakar Ri'ayatuddin Al Muadzam Shah.

Today, the economy is diverse and growing. Tourism is a major activity for the region. Visitors enjoy Teluk Cempedak beach and various waterfalls.

The area is also known for batik and keropok, which are dried fish crackers. Heavy industry is located in the Gebeng area, about 25 km north. Many large petrochemical companies operate in this industrial zone. Kuantan is also part of the East Coast Economic Region (ECER). Specifically, it is part of the ECER Special Economic Zone (SEZ). This zone covers 390,000 hectares. It aims to generate RM90 billion in investments. It also seeks to provide over 90,000 new jobs.
