Kryvyi Rih is a major industrial city in central Ukraine.
The city sits at a specific geographic meeting point. It is located at the confluence of the Saksahan and Inhulets rivers. The name Kryvyi Rih comes from Ukrainian words. These words literally mean "crooked horn" or "curved cape." This name likely describes the physical shape of the land. This shape was formed by how the Saksahan river meets the Inhulets. Local legends offer a different story. They say a "crooked" or one-eyed Cossack named Rih founded the first village.
The history of the region began with the Zaporozhian Cossacks. In 1734, the area was part of the Inhul Palanka division. In 1775, Russian authorities established Kryvyi Rih as a military staging post. This post helped manage roads leading to Russian garrisons. Later that year, the Russian government dissolved the Sich. The Cossack lands were then annexed to the province of Novorossiya. By 1860, the village had grown into a township. The early 19th century brought the first stone houses and water mills.
Industrial growth changed the city forever in the 1880s. Alexander Pol discovered rich iron-ore deposits in the area. This region is known as the Kryvbas. Pol founded the "French Society of Kryvyi Rih Ores" in 1880. This brought in capital from Belgium, France, and Britain. In 1882, workers extracted 16.4 thousand tons of ore from surface mines. The first underground mine began operations in 1886. In 1892, the Hdantsivka ironworks started processing ore locally. By 1902, the Catherine Railroad linked the city to the Donbas coal mines.
The Soviet era brought massive industrial expansion. In 1931, the foundation for the Kryvyi Rih Metallurgical Plant was laid. This plant later became known as Kryvorizhstal. It became the largest integrated metallurgical works in the Soviet Union. In 1934, its first blast furnace produced steel. The city's population grew almost tenfold by 1941. However, this era also saw great hardship. The collectivization of agriculture led to the Holodomor, or Great Famine, between 1932 and 1933.
World War II caused extreme destruction for the city. German forces occupied Kryvyi Rih from August 1941 to February 1944.

Kryvyi Rih remains a vital economic center today. By the end of the Soviet era, Kryvbas produced 42% of the USSR's iron ore. It also provided 80% of Ukraine's ore. In 2005, the privatization of Kryvorizhstal brought new foreign investment. This helped fund urban regeneration projects. However, the city has faced recent instability. Major labor protests and strikes occurred in 2017. Since the Russian invasion in February 2022, the city has faced frequent missile strikes.
