This photo is called Kozarčanka. It shows a girl named Milja Toroman. She was seventeen years old.

During World War II, a big war happened. Many groups fought for control of Yugoslavia. One group was called the Partisans. They were led by a man named Josip Broz Tito. Milja was a Partisan fighter. She lived near Mount Kozara in Bosnia.

A photographer named Georgij Skrigin met her in 1944. He was part of a traveling theatre group. He asked a leader to find a girl to photograph. The leader chose five nurses. Skrigin picked Milja. He put a cap on her head. He put a gun over her shoulder. He told her to smile. Milja did smile for the camera.

Later, the photo became a symbol. It was in many school books and posters. It showed how women helped in the war. People did not know Milja's name for a long time. She lived a quiet life and had five children. She died in 2007.
