In 1899, a new settlement site was found near Gaya Island. This site was good because it had a deep natural port. It was also close to the North Borneo Railway. The town was then named Jesselton after Sir Charles Jessel. This name stayed until the year 1967. After that, the name changed to Kota Kinabalu.

History has brought both growth and hard times to this place. In the 15th century, the Bruneian Empire had influence here. Later, the British North Borneo Chartered Company set up settlements. During World War II, the town faced very difficult days.
