The Kosovo War was a big fight in Kosovo.
It lasted from 1998 to 1999. Two main groups fought in the war.
The first group was the Yugoslav forces. They controlled Kosovo at the start. The second group was the KLA. This was a group of fighters. They wanted more rights for Albanian people.
Things became very hard for families. Many people had to leave their homes.
Over one million people fled their houses. Many others were killed or went missing. A court later said many people were treated very badly.
In 1999, a group called NATO joined the fight. They used planes to strike Yugoslav forces. This helped end the war.
A peace deal was signed in June 1999. Yugoslav forces left Kosovo after that. NATO troops entered the land on June 12. The KLA group stopped fighting soon after.
The Kosovo War was a serious armed conflict in Kosovo.
It lasted from February 28, 1998, until June 11, 1999. The war was fought between two main sides. One side was the forces of the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia. They controlled the land of Kosovo before the fighting began. The other side was a group called the Kosovo Liberation Army, or KLA.
The KLA was a group of fighters who wanted more rights for ethnic Albanians.
The roots of this conflict go back a very long time. Tensions between Serbian and Albanian communities grew throughout the 20th century. There were many moments of violence during World War I and World War II. In the years after World War II, Kosovo became part of Yugoslavia. A leader named Josip Broz Tito tried to keep peace by giving Kosovo more power. This was called autonomy, which means the region could help govern itself.
However, things changed after Tito died in 1980. The region faced economic problems and political instability.
In 1989, a Serbian leader named Slobodan Milošević took control. He took away much of the power that Kosovo once had. This led to the formation of the KLA in the early 1990s. The KLA began its first campaigns in 1995. They used sabotage to target police stations in 1996. By 1997, the group had many weapons from Albania.
In early 1998, the KLA began attacking Yugoslav authorities. This caused the Yugoslav forces to respond with a heavy presence in the area.
The fighting caused great suffering for many people. Yugoslav forces began a campaign that targeted KLA supporters. This campaign killed between 1,500 and 2,000 people by March 1999.
Many Kosovar Albanians were forced to leave their homes. Between 1.2 million and 1.45 million people were displaced. A later court found that there was a systematic campaign of terror against the Albanian population. This included many forms of abuse and murder.
Over 13,500 people were killed or went missing during the two years of war.
In March 1999, a group called NATO joined the conflict.
NATO began an aerial bombing campaign to help stop the violence. This campaign was controversial and caused many civilian deaths.
The war finally ended with the Kumanovo Agreement on June 9, 1999. This deal meant Yugoslav forces would withdraw from Kosovo. NATO forces entered the land on June 12, 1999.
After the war, some KLA members joined the Kosovo Police.
The Kosovo War was a major armed conflict in the Balkan region of Europe. It lasted from February 28, 1998, until June 11, 1999. The war involved two main opposing sides. One side was the military of the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia (FRY). This government controlled the territory of Kosovo before the fighting began. The other side was the Kosovo Liberation Army (KLA). The KLA was a separatist militia made up mostly of ethnic Albanians.
The roots of this conflict reach back many decades. Tensions between Serbian and Albanian communities existed throughout the 20th century. There were periods of violence during World War I and World War II. After World War II, Kosovo became part of the Yugoslav federation. A leader named Josip Broz Tito gave Kosovo a level of autonomy. Autonomy means the region had the power to govern its own local affairs.
However, political stability changed after Tito died in 1980. The region faced economic crises and rising nationalist unrest.
In 1989, a Serbian leader named Slobodan Milošević took control of the region. He suppressed the autonomy of Kosovo and implemented discriminatory policies against ethnic Albanians. This political repression led to the formation of the KLA in the early 1990s. The KLA wanted to fight against the loss of rights for Albanians. In 1995, the KLA began its first military campaigns. By 1997, the group acquired many weapons through smuggling from Albania.
This followed a rebellion in Albania where weapons were taken from police and army posts.
The conflict intensified in early 1998. The KLA began attacks against Yugoslav authorities in Kosovo. In response, Yugoslav forces increased their presence in the area. They used regular forces and paramilitaries to pursue KLA supporters. This campaign resulted in the deaths of 1,500 to 2,000 people. By March 1999, 370,000 Kosovar Albanians had already been displaced from their homes.
The violence grew even more intense after the withdrawal of the OSCE Kosovo Verification Mission.
On March 24, 1999, the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) intervened. NATO began an aerial bombing campaign against Yugoslav forces. They stated that their intervention was based on humanitarian grounds. This bombing campaign was controversial because it did not have UN Security Council approval. It also caused at least 488 deaths among Yugoslav civilians. Some of these victims were Kosovar refugees.
The air strikes used various technologies, including Tomahawk cruise missiles.
The war ended with the signing of the Kumanovo Agreement on June 9, 1999. This agreement required Yugoslav and Serb forces to withdraw from Kosovo. This withdrawal allowed for an international presence in the region. NATO forces officially entered Kosovo on June 12, 1999.
A later UN-administered Supreme Court found that Yugoslav troops had used a systematic campaign of terror. This included murders, arsons, and severe maltreatments against the Albanian population. However, the court ruled it was not genocide.
The human cost of the two-year conflict was very high. A compiled list documented that over 13,500 people were killed or went missing. The Yugoslav and Serb forces caused the displacement of between 1.2 million and 1.45 million Kosovar Albanians. After the war, about 200,000 Serbs, Romani, and other non-Albanians fled Kosovo.
The International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia (ICTY) later convicted several officials for war crimes. These convictions included six Serb/Yugoslav officials and one Albanian commander.
Following the war, the KLA disbanded. Some members joined other groups in the Preševo Valley or Macedonia. Others joined the new Kosovo Police. The conflict remains a significant part of European history. It shows how ethnic tensions and political changes can lead to large-scale international intervention. The war changed the political map of the Balkans and the lives of millions of people.
