Kosovo, officially the Republic of Kosovo, is a landlocked country in Southeast Europe. It is a nation with partial diplomatic recognition from the international community. The country is surrounded by several neighbors. Albania sits to the southwest, while Montenegro is to the west. Serbia borders the land to the north and east. North Macedonia is located to the southeast.
The geography of Kosovo is quite varied. The terrain includes high plains and rolling hills. It also features large mountains, some reaching very high altitudes. The climate is mostly continental. However, it also feels the influence of Mediterranean and Alpine weather patterns.

The history of the region began with the Dardani people. They were an Illyrian group mentioned in classical sources from the 4th century BCE. The Dardani established the Kingdom of Dardania. Their political and cultural center was likely near modern-day Lipjan, known anciently as Ulpiana. The Romans annexed the region in the 1st century BCE. Later, in the 3rd century CE, it became a separate Roman province.

Control of the territory shifted many times over the centuries. During the Byzantine period, it was part of the Theme of Dardania. Slavic migrations occurred in the 6th and 7th centuries CE. Later, the region became part of the Serbian medieval state. In the late 14th and 15th centuries, the Ottoman Empire began expanding into the Balkans. The Battle of Kosovo in 1389 was a defining moment. This battle involved a Serbian-led coalition fighting the Ottoman Empire. The Ottomans eventually fully conquered the land. They ruled for nearly five centuries until 1912.
Modern history brought significant changes to the region. Kosovo was part of the Kingdom of Serbia after the Balkan Wars. After World War II, it became an Autonomous Province within Yugoslavia. Tensions between Albanian and Serb communities grew during the 20th century. This led to the Kosovo War in 1998 and 1999. Following the war, the United Nations established an interim administration. On 17 February 2008, Kosovo unilaterally declared independence from Serbia.
The name "Kosovo" has interesting linguistic roots. It comes from a South Slavic origin. The term refers to a "blackbird field." This is a karst field in the eastern part of the country. This field was the site of the 1389 battle. In the Middle Ages, the western part was called Metohija. This name was used because much of the land was owned by monasteries.
Economically, Kosovo is a developing country. It has an upper-middle-income economy. The nation has seen significant growth over the last ten years. This growth occurred following the 2008 financial crisis. Kosovo is a member of several global organizations. These include the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank Group. It is also part of the International Olympic Committee.
