The river starts in the high Canadian Rockies. It is fed by melting snow and glaciers. The water flows through a rugged area with many mountains. Part of the river forms Kootenay Lake. This is one of the largest natural lakes in British Columbia.

Many people have lived near the river. The Ktunaxa people were the first to live there. They hunted and fished on the water for a long time. Later, explorers and miners came to the area. Miners looked for gold and silver in the hills.

Today, people use the river for power. Many dams were built on the water. These dams make electricity. They also help to stop floods. The river eventually flows into the big Columbia River. This happens near a place called Castlegar.
