Konstantin Sergeyevich Stanislavski was a seminal Russian and Soviet theatre practitioner.

He was a highly recognized character actor and a leading director of his generation. However, his most lasting influence rests on his "system" of actor training and rehearsal. This system changed how performers prepare for their roles. It moved theatre away from simple representation toward a deeper sense of truth.

Stanislavski's system was a rigorous process of artistic self-analysis and reflection. He developed these techniques to remove performance blocks he encountered during his career. His early work used a director-centered technique focused on external elements. He planned every movement, gesture, and the mise-en-scène in great detail. This approach sought an organic unity of all elements, a concept known as Gesamtkunstwerk.

As he evolved, his work shifted from a director-centered to an actor-centered approach. He introduced the "art of experiencing," which he contrasted with the "art of representation." While representation focuses on outward imitation, experiencing mobilizes the actor's conscious will. This helps activate subconscious behaviors and genuine emotional experiences.

In rehearsal, actors search for inner motives to justify their actions. They define a specific "task" that the character seeks to achieve in every moment. This process also helps actors discover the subtext, or the hidden meaning beneath the spoken words.

Later in his career, he developed the "Method of Physical Action." This was a more physically grounded rehearsal process. Instead of long discussions at a table, he encouraged "active analysis." In this method, actors improvise sequences of dramatic situations. Stanislavski argued that the best way to analyze a play is to take action within the given circumstances. Through physical action, an actor gains mastery over a character's inner incentives.

Stanislavski began his career as an amateur performer. At age 33, he co-founded the Moscow Art Theatre (MAT) with Vladimir Nemirovich-Danchenko.

This partnership followed a legendary 18-hour discussion. The MAT became world-famous through influential tours of Europe in 1906 and the United States from 1923 to 1924.

The company produced landmark plays, such as The Seagull in 1898 and Hamlet between 1911 and 1912.

Through the MAT, Stanislavski promoted new Russian drama by writers like Anton Chekhov and Maxim Gorky.

He also worked with major practitioners like Vsevolod Meyerhold, whom he called his "sole heir in the theatre."

His career faced a major turning point in 1928. During the MAT's 30th anniversary, he suffered a massive heart attack on stage. He waited until the curtain fell before seeking medical help. Despite this, he continued to direct, teach, and write until his death in 1938.

Stanislavski's legacy is preserved through his many writings and his students. He wrote the influential acting manual, An Actor's Work. He also wrote his autobiography, My Life in Art, though he was reluctant to do so. He used theatre studios as laboratories to experiment with new training forms.

His work helped establish psychological realism in performance. This approach remains a fundamental part of modern actor training worldwide.
