He also developed a technique of organizing short lyric poems into larger narrative poems. This structure allowed him to create flowing, cohesive works. His goal was often to achieve inner liberation and self-understanding through his verse. This approach made his work feel both intensely personal and highly structured.

His literary career moved through several distinct stages of development. His first major collection, *Under the Northern Sky*, was published in 1894. This work established his reputation for originality. His second collection, *In Boundlessness*, was released in 1895. In this stage, he began experimenting more deeply with rhythm. His third collection, *Silence*, was published in 1898 after he traveled through Europe. Finally, his 1900 collection, *Burning Buildings*, became a peak of his legacy.

His mother, Vera, was a strong influence on his early interest in literature. He learned to read at age five and was inspired by poets like Alexander Pushkin. However, his path was not easy. He was expelled from a gymnasium for political activities in 1886. He also faced expulsion from Moscow State University after participating in student unrest.

Despite these setbacks, several mentors helped him succeed. The writer Vladimir Korolenko acted as a "literary godfather" to him. Korolenko provided critical analysis and encouragement during Balmont's early failures.

Later, Professor Nikolai Storozhenko provided essential practical help. He introduced Balmont to influential editors and publishers. This connection allowed Balmont to translate works on European literature, which provided him with financial stability for three years. These early struggles and supports were vital to his eventual rise.

Balmont's life included significant personal hardships and changes. In 1890, an unhappy marriage led to a suicide attempt.

This event left him with a permanent limp and an injured writing hand. He also experienced a second suicide attempt in 1909. His travels in Western Europe also shaped his intellectual growth. In 1897, he was invited to Oxford University to lecture on Russian poetry. He spent much of his later life studying diverse subjects, including Spanish art and Chinese culture.

Balmont's legacy is tied to the broader movement of Russian Symbolism. He was one of the most popular poets within this movement. His translations of Edgar Allan Poe remain exemplary to modern scholars. After the Bolshevik revolution, he emigrated from Russia in 1920. He lived in exile and maintained friendships with other Russian emigrant poets. He died of pneumonia in France in 1942, leaving behind a vast body of work that changed how Russian poetry sounded.
