Koku

language culture Maturity 11-13 Next article →

A koku is a way to measure rice. One koku is a lot of food. It can feed one person for a year.

Long ago, leaders used it to show their power. A leader needed 10,000 koku to be important. This helped them know their place in the land.

People also used it to measure ships. Small ships could carry 50 koku. Big ships carried over 1,000 koku.

Today, we use small cups for rice. One cup is a tiny part of a koku. It is called a gō.

It is amazing how much rice can be measured!
