Koko was a famous western lowland gorilla.

She was born in 1971 at the San Francisco Zoo. Koko became well known for her ability to use signs. She used signs from American Sign Language to talk. She could use signs for things like "good" or "false." Koko even made up new signs. For example, she used "finger-bracelet" to mean a ring.

Many scientists studied Koko. Some experts thought she used language like people do. Other scientists disagreed. They thought Koko was just mimicking her teachers. They felt she did not use grammar. Grammar is the set of rules for making sentences.

Koko also had a kitten named All Ball.

This story became a popular book for children. Koko helped people see that gorillas have deep feelings. Before Koko, many people thought gorillas were just violent. Her life changed how the world views animal intelligence.
