Kochari

arts Maturity 7-9 Next article →

Kochari is a famous folk dance. It started in the Armenian Highlands. People have danced it for over a thousand years. It is a circle dance. This means dancers move together in a ring.

Many different groups dance this way. Armenians, Assyrians, Azerbaijanis, and Pontic Greeks all have their own versions. Each group has its own music and steps. In Azerbaijan, people dance it at weddings. Some groups in Nakhchivan perform it in shows.

The name has many meanings. In Armenian, it means "knee-come." In Pontic Greek, it means "raising the heel." This is because dancers use their heels a lot. Some modern steps include a "tremolo step." This is when a dancer shakes their whole body. This dance can look very strong or even scary. It was made to look tough. Because it is so special, UNESCO helps protect it. They want to make sure these traditions stay alive for a long time.
