Prince Otto was the first king. He came from Bavaria. He helped build the army and schools. But Otto had some problems with the people. He was a Catholic, but most Greeks were Orthodox Christians. In 1843, people asked for a constitution. A constitution is a set of rules for a government. This made Otto a constitutional monarch. This means he had to follow the rules.

The Kingdom of Greece was a nation that began in 1832. Before this, the Ottoman Empire had ruled much of the land for nearly 400 years. After a long struggle called the Greek War of Independence, Greece became free. The Treaty of Constantinople officially recognized Greece as an independent state. This treaty also decided that Greece would be a monarchy. A monarchy is a system where a king or queen leads the country.

Making a new country is a very hard job. In the early years, the government worked to build important things. They created a new army and a justice system. They also started a new education system for students. Leaders worked to set up a way for the government to run smoothly. They also had to decide how the church would work. In 1833, the government made the Greek Church independent from the Patriarch in Constantinople.

Prince Otto of Bavaria was the very first king. He arrived in the capital, Nafplion, in 1833 on a British warship.

Otto ruled as an absolute monarch for many years. This meant he held most of the power himself. However, the people wanted more say in how things worked. In September 1843, a revolt broke out in Athens. Because of this, Otto agreed to a constitution. This changed Greece into a constitutional monarchy. Now, there was a Prime Minister to lead the government.

After Otto left in 1862, King George I took the throne in 1863.

He ruled for fifty years and was a popular choice. During his long reign, Greece grew by adding new lands like Thessaly in 1881. Many leaders, such as Alexandros Koumoundouros and Charilaos Trikoupis, helped shape the kingdom. Later, Eleftherios Venizelos brought many new reforms to the country. He helped Greece win during the Balkan Wars. This era saw much change in how the land was shaped.

History shows that the monarchy changed many times. Greece became a republic in 1924, but the monarchy returned in 1935.

The country faced hard times during World War II when German forces invaded. After the war and a civil war, the monarchy was back for a while. However, a military group called the Regime of the Colonels took power in 1967. They ended the monarchy in 1973. Finally, a vote in 1974 confirmed that Greece would be the Third Hellenic Republic.

The Kingdom of Greece was a sovereign state that existed from 1832 until its abolition in 1973. It was established following the Greek War of Independence, which ended nearly four centuries of Ottoman Empire rule. The country's status as an independent monarchy was formally recognized by the Treaty of Constantinople in 1832.

This period marked the transition from the First Hellenic Republic to a new era of Greek statehood. Throughout its history, the kingdom faced significant political shifts, wars, and changes in how its people were governed.

The creation of the kingdom involved complex diplomatic and internal processes. After the Greek Declaration of Independence in 1822, the new state lacked international recognition and resources. The Great Powers—the United Kingdom, the Russian Empire, and the Kingdom of France—eventually intervened to weaken Ottoman influence in the Eastern Mediterranean. This led to the London Protocol of 1828 and the subsequent 1830 Protocol of London, which secured full independence. To strengthen ties with these powers, Greece agreed to become a monarchy in 1832. The first king chosen was Otto von Wittelsbach, a Prince of Bavaria, who arrived in the capital of Nafplion in 1833.

King Otto's reign from 1832 to 1862 was a period of intense institutional building and political struggle. Initially, a group of Bavarian Regents governed in his name, attempting to impose German hierarchical structures on the Greek administration. They established the foundations for the national army, the justice system, and the education system. However, Otto ruled as an absolute monarch, meaning he held nearly all political authority. This caused great discontent among the Greek people. In September 1843, a revolt in Athens forced Otto to grant a constitution. This transformed the nation into a constitutional monarchy with a bicameral parliament consisting of the Vouli and the Senate.

Following Otto's departure in 1862, the Greek National Assembly elected George I, a Danish prince, to the throne in 1863. His fifty-year reign was characterized by both political instability and territorial expansion. One major success was the transfer of the Ionian Islands from British rule to Greece in 1864. During his rule, Greece also annexed Thessaly in 1881.

The era was also defined by the Megali Idea. This was an ideological goal to annex lands with large Greek populations and eventually make Constantinople the capital. This ambition drove much of the country's foreign policy and sparked various rebellions against Ottoman rule.

The early 20th century brought rapid change through military and political reform. In 1909, the Goudi coup brought Eleftherios Venizelos to power, leading to sweeping national reforms. This momentum continued during the Balkan Wars, where the Hellenic Army achieved victory. Crown Prince Constantine played a significant military role during this time.

However, the monarchy soon faced a deep internal conflict known as the National Schism. This was a political rift between Monarchist forces and Venizelist forces regarding Greece's role in World War I. The dispute led to the exile of Constantine and the reinstatement of Venizelos.

Between 1920 and 1935, the monarchy experienced several periods of instability and restoration. After King Alexander died in 1920, a constitutional crisis occurred, eventually leading to the return of Constantine via a plebiscite. However, a disastrous defeat in Asia Minor triggered the 11 September 1922 Revolution. This resulted in the proclamation of the Second Hellenic Republic in 1924. The monarchy was restored in 1935 following a controversial referendum.

This period also saw the rise of the 4th of August Regime, an ultranationalist dictatorship led by Ioannis Metaxas, who held absolute power with the support of King George.

The final decades of the kingdom were shaped by the aftermath of World War II and internal military shifts. After the German invasion and the subsequent Greek Civil War, the monarchy was reaffirmed. The country later entered a period of economic growth, but political stability remained fragile. In 1967, the Regime of the Colonels established a military dictatorship. King Constantine II attempted a counter-coup in 1967 but was forced into exile. The monarchy was officially abolished in 1973. A final, democratic referendum in 1974 confirmed this change, establishing the Third Hellenic Republic.
