After the Allied victory in World War I, Venizelos pursued the "Megali Idea." This was a plan to unite all Greek-speaking people under one banner. He sought territorial concessions in Western Anatolia and Thrace. 
Venizelos returned to active politics with a landslide victory in 1928. 
Venizelos' early life was shaped by the instability of the Ottoman Empire. He was born in Mournies, near Chania, in Ottoman Crete.
