He spent 67 years making movies. His long career covered both silent films and movies with sound. People often called him an "auteur." This means he was an independent artist with a unique style. He let the subject of a story decide how the film should look. Vidor cared deeply about real human issues.

He made films about race, class, and the struggle of people against nature. He was also known as an "actors' director." This means he helped his actors give very strong performances. Many of his actors even won or were nominated for Academy Awards.

Making a movie involves many different jobs and steps. Vidor started very small as a young boy. He used a Box Brownie camera to take photos of his family. Later, he worked as a ticket taker and a projectionist.

They sometimes lived on cereal scraps and free milk samples from grocery stores. Eventually, he moved from small jobs to writing scripts and directing his own films.

King Vidor was born in Galveston, Texas, in 1894. His father, Charles Vidor, was a successful lumber dealer. His mother, Kate Wallis, was a relative of the famous frontiersman Davy Crockett.

Many of Vidor's films became very important in movie history. His 1925 film, *The Big Parade*, was a massive hit. It was a silent movie about ordinary soldiers in a war. It was the most profitable silent film for the MGM studio for many years.

His work helped change how movies showed the beauty and danger of the American landscape. While his early films focused on the strength of groups, his later films focused on strong individuals. These characters often fought against hard things like war or the land. Vidor's career showed how much a single person can change the art of storytelling. He received an honorary Oscar in 1979 for his incredible work in cinema.
