It serves as a central hub for higher education and scientific discovery within the city. The university is significant because it is the largest institution of its kind in the country. As of 2022, the university enrolled more than 117,096 students. It provides specialized training and advanced research opportunities across many different academic fields.

The university operates through a complex structure of various academic divisions called faculties. There are 24 faculties in total under the KAU system. Fifteen of these faculties are located directly on the main campus in south Jeddah. The remaining nine faculties are situated at different locations off-campus. This organization allows the university to manage a massive student population and diverse subjects. Students can choose from many paths, including medicine, engineering, and the arts.

Some academic programs at KAU are quite unique within the region. The university offers specific courses that are unavailable at other Saudi Arabian universities. These include specialized studies in marine science, meteorology, and astronomy. The Faculty of Engineering offers many accredited programs, such as nuclear engineering and aeronautical engineering. These programs have been recognized as Substantially Equivalent by ABET since 2003. This ensures that the technical training meets specific international standards.

The history of the university began with a vision for private education. In 1964, Mohammed Ali Hafiz proposed creating a private university in Jeddah. A preparatory committee of six members was formed to investigate the idea. This group included Muhammad Abu Bakr Bakhashab.

In 1967, the university was officially established as a private institution. It was named after King Abdulaziz ibn Saud, the founder of Saudi Arabia. The first academic year began in 1968 with only 98 students in total.

A major shift occurred in 1974 when the university became public. The Council of Ministers of Saudi Arabia decided to merge the school with the government.

This transition was supported by King Faisal, who provided encouragement and financial aid. By this time, the student body had grown to nearly 31,000 people. Approximately 28% of those students were international residents. The physical campus was designed by the Bangladeshi-American architect Fazlur Rahman Khan.

Research is a core pillar of the university's modern identity. KAU hosts 13 different research centers focusing on critical global issues. These centers study topics like medical genomes, climate change, and desalination.

One notable center is the Hajj Research Center, which was founded in the 1970s by Sami Angawi. This center studies the logistics of the pilgrimage to Mecca. The university also engages in international partnerships, such as a lunar research program with Morocco.

The university has achieved high rankings in global academic lists. In 2018, Times Higher Education ranked it as the top Arab university. This ranking was based on its international outlook and citation impact.

US News rankings also noted its high rate of international research collaboration. In 2022, it was ranked 44th in the world by U.S. News & World Report. It also holds positions in the Academic Ranking of World Universities and the QS World University Rankings.

Beyond teaching, the university plays a role in the professional development of the region. Many graduates go on to hold important leadership roles in government and business. For example, alumni serve as directors in health affairs and deputy ministers. Others lead major medical groups or international holding companies. This connection between education and professional leadership helps shape the society of Saudi Arabia. The institution continues to grow as a center for both local and global advancement.
