Kilonova

space Maturity 5-7 Next article →

A kilonova is a bright flash in space.

It happens when two neutron stars crash together. A neutron star is a very small and dense star. Sometimes, a neutron star hits a black hole instead. This big crash makes a bright glow. The glow can last for weeks or months. It is much brighter than a nova. A nova is a smaller star explosion.

The crash also makes new heavy elements. These are the building blocks of matter. Scientists found strontium and yttrium in a kilonova. These are heavy parts made during the crash.
