Kilometres per hour

physical science Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Kilometres per hour is a way to measure speed. It tells us how many kilometres a thing travels in exactly one hour.

This unit helps us understand how fast a car or a person is moving. It is a very useful tool for travel and safety. People use it to set limits on how fast vehicles can go. Knowing speed helps keep everyone on the road much safer.

There are different ways to write this unit in short forms. The International System of Units, or SI, uses the symbol km/h. This system is used by scientists and teachers all over the world. Some news groups like Reuters use the letters kph instead. In the military, people sometimes call these units "klicks."

Different countries even have their own special ways to write it. For example, Indonesia and Malaysia use km/j for this measurement. In Russia, you might see it written as км/ч.

Learning about the history of this unit is quite interesting. The metre was first defined back in 1799. At first, people did not use kilometres per hour very often. They preferred to use a larger unit called the myriametre. In 1802, the term first appeared in French books. The Dutch people started using the kilometre in 1817. They called it a "Dutch mile" at that time.

By 1866, people in the United States were already using the term.

Rules for these symbols were made by special groups. In 1879, a group called the CIPM suggested using km for kilometres. Later, in 1948, another group decided to use h for hours. They made rules for how to combine these symbols together. In 1960, the SI standards were finally published for everyone. These rules are used by many legal and school authorities today.

Using the same symbols helps scientists talk to each other clearly.

Today, we see these units on many things we use every day. The Vienna Convention helps make road signs look similar in many countries. In the European Union, every car speedometer must show km/h. This rule was made to help people drive easily across borders. Even in the United States, car speedometers can show km/h. This helps drivers understand their speed no matter where they are.
