Kigali is the capital and largest city of Rwanda.

The name Kigali has deep roots in Rwandan history and language. The word comes from a Kinyarwanda prefix and an adjective suffix. Together, they mean "wide" or "broad."
Long before the modern city, the region had many inhabitants. The Twa people were the earliest inhabitants of what is now Rwanda. They were hunter-gatherers who settled the area between 8000 and 3000 BC. Later, Bantu groups including the Hutu and Tutsi arrived. They began clearing forests to practice agriculture. The Kingdom of Rwanda was founded in the 14th century near Lake Muhazi. At that time, Kigali was part of a small state. It faced larger neighbors like Bugesera and Gisaka. Over several centuries, different dynasties fought to control and expand these territories.
The modern founding of Kigali began in 1907.
Kigali became the national capital in 1962. This shifted the administrative focus away from Huye. The city grew steadily for several decades. In the early 1970s, the population was only 25,000. At that time, there were only five paved roads. By 1991, the population reached 250,000. The city faced extreme hardship during the 1990s. In April 1994, President Juvénal Habyarimana was killed when his aircraft was shot down near Kigali. This event triggered the Rwandan genocide. The Rwandan Patriotic Front (RPF) fought to take control of the country. They seized Kigali on 4 July 1994. Since then, the city has experienced rapid growth and much of it has been rebuilt.
Today, Kigali is a massive urban center.

Kigali is also an important center for international activity. The city hosts many conferences and exhibitions. Authorities work hard to attract visitors for leisure tourism.
