The Second Polish Republic was a newly formed country. Its leader was a man named Józef Piłsudski. He wanted to create a new order in the region. He dreamed of a group of nations called the Intermarium federation. This group would be led by Poland.

To make his plan work, Piłsudski sought an alliance. He reached out to Symon Petliura of the Ukrainian People's Republic. They signed a secret deal called the Treaty of Warsaw on April 21, 1920.

This pact promised military help to Ukraine. In return, Ukraine would accept certain borders. The goal was to create a formally independent Ukraine. However, this new Ukraine would depend on Poland.

The military campaign began in the spring of 1920. Polish and Ukrainian forces moved together against Soviet control. They were very successful at first. On May 7, 1920, the allied armies captured the city of Kiev.
