Numbers show how much these communities grew over time. In 1922, only 700 people lived on kibbutzim. By 1950, that number rose to 65,000 people. The population reached its highest point in 1989 with 129,000 people.

By 2010, there were 270 kibbutzim in Israel. This included a total population of 126,000 people. These communities are very important to the country's economy. Their farms and factories make 40% of Israel's agricultural output. This is worth over US$1.7 billion.

Kibbutzim connect to the history of how Israel was built. During difficult times, members took on military roles to protect their homes.

Some kibbutzim were even set up in new areas to help define borders. Today, the kibbutz movement is organized into different groups. There is the secular Kibbutz Movement with about 230 communities. There is also the Religious Kibbutz Movement with 16 communities.

Even though they have changed, they remain a big part of the land.

Some kibbutzim have become very successful in specialized industries. For example, Kibbutz Sasa has about 200 members. In 2010, it generated US$850 million in annual revenue. This money came from its military-plastics industry. This shows how a small community can have a large economic impact. Other kibbutzim have also developed strong high-tech sectors.

This transition from simple farming to complex industry is a major part of their story.

Kibbutzim have also played a role in the political and military history of the region. During times of conflict, members took on military roles to protect their settlements.

Some kibbutzim were established in outlying areas to help define borders. In 1946, eleven new "Tower and Stockade" kibbutzim were built in the Negev desert. This was done to help ensure the land would be part of the future state. These communities have been deeply connected to the building of the nation.
