A kibbutz is a special community in Israel.

A kibbutz is a special type of community in Israel.

Living in a kibbutz works through sharing. In the past, members worked the land as a team. This helped them buy expensive tools and stay safe. Many kibbutzim even had children live in special children's houses.
The history of the kibbutz began in the early 1900s.

Numbers show how much these communities grew over time. In 1922, only 700 people lived on kibbutzim. By 1950, that number rose to 65,000 people. The population reached its highest point in 1989 with 129,000 people.
Kibbutzim connect to the history of how Israel was built. During difficult times, members took on military roles to protect their homes.

A kibbutz is an intentional community located in Israel.

The mechanism of kibbutz life relies on collective resources. In the early days, working as a group was a necessity. Establishing a farm required a lot of money, or capital. Individual settlers often lacked the funds to buy tools or land alone. By pooling their resources, they could build lasting settlements. This collective approach also provided security in a difficult environment. Members shared the work, the food, and the costs of living. This system allowed them to survive in areas that were hard to settle.
Kibbutzim can be divided into different types based on their beliefs. Many are secular, meaning they do not follow religious laws. Some of these groups were even described as "monasteries without God." They focused on social equality and often practiced unique traditions. Other kibbutzim are religious and follow Jewish laws. The Religious Kibbutz Movement includes 16 communities. There is also a much smaller group called Poalei Agudat Yisrael with two kibbutzim. These groups show how different people can live together using the kibbutz model.
The history of the movement began in the early 20th century. The first kibbutz, Degania Alef, was founded in 1910.

As time passed, the kibbutz population grew significantly.
Some kibbutzim have become very successful in specialized industries. For example, Kibbutz Sasa has about 200 members. In 2010, it generated US$850 million in annual revenue. This money came from its military-plastics industry. This shows how a small community can have a large economic impact. Other kibbutzim have also developed strong high-tech sectors.
Kibbutzim have also played a role in the political and military history of the region. During times of conflict, members took on military roles to protect their settlements.
