David Ben-Gurion was the primary national founder of the State of Israel.

Ben-Gurion was born David Grün on 16 October 1886, in Płońsk, Poland. At that time, Płońsk was part of the Russian Empire. His father, Avigdor Grün, was a pokątny doradca, or secret adviser. This role involved helping clients navigate a corrupt legal system. David was the youngest of three boys. His mother, Scheindel, died of sepsis following a stillbirth in 1897. After his mother's death, his father remarried two years later.
His early education was focused on Hebrew and Russian studies. Between the ages of five and 13, he attended five different heders. A heder is a traditional school for Jewish children. Some of these schools were "modern" and taught in Hebrew. Because his father could not afford a beth midrash, his formal education ended after his bar mitzvah. At age 14, he helped form a youth club called Ezra. This group promoted Hebrew studies and encouraged emigration to the Holy Land.
In 1904, Ben-Gurion moved to Warsaw to seek technical education. He could not enroll in the local mechanical-technical school due to insufficient qualifications. Instead, he taught Hebrew in a Warsaw heder. During this time, he joined the Poalei Zion, a Social-Democratic Jewish Workers' Party. This was a clandestine, or secret, political group. In 1905, the Russian Revolution broke out. Ben-Gurion was arrested twice during the government clampdown. He was released the second time only because of his father's help.
In the autumn of 1906, Ben-Gurion immigrated to the Palestine region of the Ottoman Empire. He traveled with his sweetheart, Rachel Nelkin, and her mother. He first settled in Petah Tikva, a large Jewish agricultural settlement. The town had about 80 households and a population of nearly 1,500 people. Life was very difficult for him as a day laborer. He often struggled to find work and lacked money for food. He also suffered from malaria during this period.
Ben-Gurion's political influence grew rapidly through various organizations. He became the head of the Jewish Agency in 1935. In 1946, he also became the executive head of the World Zionist Organization. On 14 May 1948, he formally proclaimed the establishment of Israel. He helped write the Israeli Declaration of Independence and was the first to sign it. During the 1948 Arab–Israeli War, he united various Jewish militias into the Israel Defense Forces, known as the IDF.
As prime minister, Ben-Gurion focused on building state institutions and national projects. He oversaw the absorption of many new Jewish immigrants. He also managed complex foreign policy issues. One major task was improving relations with West Germany. He negotiated a reparations agreement to compensate for property lost during the Holocaust. He served as prime minister until 1963, with a brief break from 1954 to 1955. He returned to the role of minister of defence in 1955 following the Lavon Affair.
In his later years, Ben-Gurion moved to a modest hut in Sde Boker. This was a kibbutz, or collective community, located in the Negev desert. He lived there until his death on 1 December 1973. His life was so impactful that Time magazine named him one of the 100 Most Important People of the 20th century. His journey from a small town in Poland to the leadership of a new nation remains a significant part of modern history.
