Khosrow II was the last great emperor of the pre-Islamic Sasanian Empire.

He ruled much of ancient Iran from 590 to 628 CE. His full name is often written as Khosrow Parviz in New Persian. This title means "Khosrow the Victorious." He was the son of Hormizd IV and the grandson of the famous Khosrow I. His reign was a period of massive territorial growth and intense conflict. It marked the final era of Sasanian power before the Muslim conquest of Iran.

His path to the throne began with a major political crisis. In 590 CE, a powerful general named Bahram Chobin led a rebellion. Bahram was the first person to challenge the legitimacy of the Sasanian family. He claimed that the House of Sasan had stolen power from the Parthian dynasty. To support his claim, Bahram used religious beliefs to present himself as a savior. This rebellion forced Khosrow II to flee his home. He sought refuge in the Byzantine Empire to find safety and support.

To regain his empire, Khosrow II formed a strategic alliance with the Byzantine emperor, Maurice.

This deal was not free. In exchange for military help, Khosrow had to give up several important cities. These included Amida, Carrhae, Dara, and Martyropolis. The Byzantines also gained control over the region of Lazistan. With Byzantine troops, Khosrow invaded Mesopotamia to fight Bahram Chobin. By 591 CE, Khosrow had successfully reclaimed his throne and his capital, Ctesiphon.

Once his power was secure, Khosrow II focused on consolidating his rule. He showed great tolerance toward his Christian subjects. Much of this influence came from his influential wife, Queen Shirin. She was a Christian from Khuzestan and held great favor at court. Under her influence, the Sasanian court allowed more freedom for Christian communities. Shirin even funded the construction of a church and a monastery near the palace. This period saw the Arab Lakhmid kingdom openly convert to the Church of the East.

Khosrow II eventually launched a massive war against the Byzantine Empire in 602 CE. He claimed he was avenging the murder of his former ally, Maurice. This war led to huge territorial gains for the Persians. They captured many rich provinces across the Middle East. These victories were so significant that they earned him his "Victorious" title. At its peak, the Sasanian Empire reached a massive size.

However, these gains were hard to maintain during long years of fighting.

Despite his military success, the empire faced internal collapse. The long wars caused deep dissatisfaction among the noble families. In 628 CE, a coup was organized to remove Khosrow from power. His own son, Sheroe, led the movement and killed him. Sheroe then took the throne as Kavad II. This event triggered a violent civil war and a period of instability. The empire lost almost all the territory it had gained during the wars.

Khosrow II remains a legendary figure in Persian culture and literature. Famous poets like Ferdowsi and Nizami Ganjavi wrote about his life. In these works, he is often depicted as a romantic hero. The story of "Khosrow and Shirin" describes his difficult and long courtship of the princess Shirin. These stories blend historical facts with fictional elements to create a cultural legend. His life serves as a bridge between the ancient Sasanian world and the lasting traditions of Persian storytelling.
