Writing was a special part of Grahame's daily life. He often jotted down his thoughts in prose and verse inside bank ledgers. He began sending his stories to magazines in 1887. This led to his first published piece in the St James's Gazette in 1888. Later, he wrote collections like Pagan Papers in 1893. He also wrote The Golden Age in 1895. These books were often filled with stories about children and their adventures.

Grahame had a very eventful early life. He was born on March 8, 1859, in Edinburgh, Scotland.

His family moved to Inveraray when he was a baby. Sadly, his mother died of scarlet fever in 1864. Grahame also caught the illness and became very sick. He lived with his grandmother in Berkshire for many years. He later attended St Edward's School in Oxford, where he was a great student and athlete.

Before he was a full-time writer, Grahame had a successful career. He joined the Bank of England in 1879 at age nineteen. He worked there as a gentleman clerk for nearly thirty years. He was very talented and scored 100 per cent on his English Essay exam. He eventually became the youngest Secretary of the Bank at age thirty-nine. This was one of the three highest jobs at the bank. He retired from the bank in 1908 when he was forty-nine.

His most famous book grew from his love for his son, Alastair. Grahame told Alastair bedtime stories about animals like a toad. He also wrote letters to his son that included animal tales. These stories eventually became The Wind in the Willows, published in 1908. Grahame married Elspeth Thomson in 1899 in Cornwall. He died in 1932 and was buried in Pangbourne. He left the money from his books to the Bodleian Library.
