He served as a United States federal judge from 1905 to 1922. Later, he became the first commissioner of baseball in 1920. Landis is best known for his strict leadership during the Black Sox Scandal. This scandal involved players conspiring to lose the 1919 World Series. By taking firm action, Landis helped restore public confidence in professional baseball.

Landis was born on November 20, 1866, in Millville, Ohio. His parents named him after the Battle of Kennesaw Mountain in Georgia. His father, Abraham, was a physician who had fought in that battle.

As a child, Kenesaw worked on a 13-acre farm in Indiana. He also worked as a news delivery boy starting at age ten. He later taught himself shorthand to become a court reporter in 1883. Landis eventually earned his law degree from Union Law School in 1891. He then began a legal practice in Chicago.

In 1893, Landis moved to Washington, D.C., to work in the State Department. He served as the personal secretary to Walter Q. Gresham, the Secretary of State. Landis worked hard to protect Gresham's interests against political pressure. After Gresham died in 1895, Landis declined an offer to be an ambassador to Venezuela. Instead, he returned to Chicago to build a corporate law practice. He also became deeply involved in Republican Party politics. This political work helped him gain the connections needed for higher office.

President Theodore Roosevelt appointed Landis to the federal bench in 1905.

Landis presided over the United States District Court for the Northern District of Illinois. His courtroom was a theatrical place with mahogany and marble. He was known as a "character" by local writers. Landis was a tough judge who was not afraid of big business. In 1907, he fined Standard Oil of Indiana more than $29 million. This fine was for violating laws regarding railroad freight tariffs.

During World War I, Landis presided over many high-profile trials. He handled cases involving people who resisted the military draft. He often imposed heavy sentences on those convicted of opposing the war effort. While some of his decisions were later reversed or changed, he remained a strict figure. His judicial style was often described as dramatic. He would use sharp words to command respect in his courtroom. This reputation for toughness made him a candidate for leadership in baseball.

In 1920, the owners of the American and National Leagues faced a crisis. The Black Sox Scandal had damaged the reputation of the sport. Owners sought a leader with the power to clean up the game. They chose Landis and gave him full authority to act in baseball's best interest.

He used this power to expel eight members of the Chicago White Sox. These players had conspired to lose the 1919 World Series. Landis refused to reinstate them, even after they asked many times. This decision was central to his mission of restoring integrity.

Landis held his position as commissioner for nearly 25 years until his death in 1944. His legacy remains a subject of debate among historians. Many credit his "iron rule" with saving the game from corruption. However, some argue his punishments were overly harsh. Supporters of players like "Shoeless Joe" Jackson believed Landis was too strict. Others suggest his leadership style may have delayed the racial integration of baseball.
