He is widely considered one of the greatest athletes in the history of the sport. Rosewall achieved an incredible total of 147 singles titles during his career. This impressive tally included 23 major titles. Specifically, he won 15 Pro Majors and eight Grand Slam tournaments. He was also a dominant force in doubles play. He earned 15 Pro Major doubles titles and nine Grand Slam doubles titles. His ability to win across different eras made him a true icon of tennis.

Rosewall’s playing style was defined by precision and incredible physical endurance. Although he was a natural left-hander, his father taught him to play right-handed. He did not rely on a powerful serve, which was described as merely accurate and relatively soft. Instead, he used a renowned and powerful backhand to control matches. He was also a master of the volley, which is hitting the ball before it bounces.

While his fellow players sarcastically nicknamed him "Muscles" due to his lean physique, he was actually very fast and agile. He was a tireless competitor who used strategy to outlast his opponents.

His mastery of the game was most evident in his ability to adapt to different court surfaces. In the 1962–63 period, Rosewall achieved a unique distinction in tennis history. He became the only player to simultaneously hold Pro Slam titles on three different surfaces. A Pro Slam occurs when a player wins the three major professional titles in a single calendar year. This required him to be equally effective on grass, clay, and other surfaces. His technical skill allowed him to win through perfect placement rather than raw strength.

Rosewall's journey began in Hurstville, Sydney, where he was born on November 2, 1934. His father, Robert, was a grocer who owned three clay tennis courts in Rockdale. Ken began practicing at the age of three using a shortened racket. He practiced early in the morning to refine his skills.

By age nine, he played his first tournament. At age 11, he won the Metropolitan Hardcourt Championships for the under-fourteen category. In 1949, at just 14 years old, he became the youngest player to win an Australian title.

During his amateur years, Rosewall often played alongside Lew Hoad. The two were famously known as the "Sydney twins" or the "Gold Dust Twins."

They had very different personalities and playing styles, yet they were highly successful. In 1956, they captured almost all the Grand Slam men's doubles titles together. Rosewall also helped the Australian team win three Davis Cup Challenge Rounds in 1953, 1955, and 1956. During those years, he won 15 of the 17 singles rubbers he played for his country.

In 1956, Rosewall made the transition from amateur to professional tennis. He accepted an offer from promoter Jack Kramer on December 30, 1956. His first professional match took place on January 14, 1957, against Pancho Gonzales. This move was significant because there was a massive gap between amateur and professional levels. Rosewall proved his talent quickly by winning the Wembley Pro title in September 1957. He also won several world professional championship tours in 1963 and 1964.

Even as he aged, Rosewall continued to reach the highest levels of competition. He remained a top-ranked player from the early 1950s until the early 1970s. At the 1971 Australian Open, he achieved a historic milestone in the Open Era. He became the first man to win a Grand Slam tournament without dropping a single set.
