His work emerged from the New York City graffiti subculture of the 1980s. Haring developed a unique visual language through animated, high-energy imagery. He used bold lines to represent movement and life. His art was not just for galleries; it was meant for the public. He used his iconic symbols to address social and political themes. This included advocacy for safe sex and AIDS awareness.

Haring’s creative process often began in the New York City subway system. He viewed the subway stations as his personal laboratory. He used black, unused advertising boards as a canvas. Using white chalk, he drew figures, dogs, and other stylized shapes. This method allowed him to experiment with spontaneous, rapid drawing. One of his most famous symbols was the Radiant Baby. This was a crawling infant emitting rays of light. He used this symbol as a signature for his subway work. He also used word juxtaposition, inspired by the cut-up technique of William S. Burroughs. He would attach hundreds of these word-based headlines to lamp-posts in Manhattan.

His artistic style can be divided into several distinct phases and forms. He began with small-scale subway drawings and chalk outlines. As he gained recognition, he moved to larger, colorful murals. Many of these were commissioned for public spaces like hospitals and schools. Between 1982 and 1989, he produced more than 50 public artworks. He also worked in commercial design, such as creating Swatch watches. His work extended to textiles, collaborating with designer Vivienne Westwood. He even designed stage sets and MTV decorations. This variety showed his ability to move between fine art and popular culture.

Haring's life began on May 4, 1958, in Reading, Pennsylvania.

He was raised in Kutztown by his parents and three sisters. His father was an engineer and an amateur cartoonist. Early influences included Walt Disney and Dr. Seuss. He studied commercial art in Pittsburgh before moving to New York in 1978. At the School of Visual Arts, he studied painting and semiotics. He was inspired by artists like Jackson Pollock and Jean Dubuffet. He also learned from the sculptor Christo, who taught him about involving the public in art. These influences shaped his belief that the act of painting was a performance.

The significance of Haring's work is seen in his massive global reach. He participated in major international exhibitions like the Venice Biennale and the São Paulo Biennale. He was featured in high-profile publications like Newsweek and Vanity Fair. His productivity was immense; he could sometimes complete 40 paintings in a single day. In 1982, he was part of the first artists to use the Spectacolor billboard in Times Square. His murals appeared in cities like Milan, London, and Amsterdam.

Even after his death, his influence remains visible through his many public installations.

Notable examples of his work highlight his social activism. In 1986, he created the "Crack Is Wack" mural in East Harlem. This mural addressed the crack cocaine epidemic. Although he was initially arrested for vandalism, the work became a famous landmark.

His later works also addressed apartheid and nuclear disarmament. He used his iconography to make complex political ideas accessible to everyone. He even opened the Pop Shop in 1986 to extend his work to a wider audience. This helped bridge the gap between high art and everyday objects.

Haring’s legacy connects art to social justice and human rights. He was an important figure in the LGBTQ+ community. In 2014, he was an inaugural honoree in the Rainbow Honor Walk in San Francisco. He was also inducted into the National LGBTQ Wall of Honor in New York City.

Sadly, Haring died of AIDS-related complications on February 16, 1990. His life and art continue to inspire discussions about how visual language can drive social change. He proved that art could be both a beautiful expression and a powerful tool for activism.
