Katarina Witt is a legendary German figure skater. She is celebrated as one of the greatest ladies' singles skaters in history. People remember her for her athleticism and her charismatic appeal. She also maintained a glamorous image while performing on the ice. Witt achieved incredible success by winning two Olympic gold medals. She is one of only two women to defend an Olympic ladies' singles title. The other skater to do this was the Norwegian athlete Sonja Henie.

Witt's path to greatness required intense and disciplined training. She represented the SC Karl-Marx-Stadt club for East Germany. Her coach, Jutta Müller, began working with her in 1977. Witt practiced six days every week. Her training sessions often lasted seven hours each day. A significant portion of this time was dedicated to compulsory figures. These are precise patterns that skaters must trace on the ice.

Her competitive career was defined by technical milestones and high-pressure moments. In 1982, Witt became the first woman to land a triple flip. This is a complex jump involving three full rotations in the air. However, she missed the gold medal that year after stepping out of three jumps. This included the triple flip and a double axel. Despite this setback, she continued to improve her technical skills. She eventually mastered programs containing many triple jumps.

She also won her first World title in a dominant fashion. Between 1984 and 1988, she won ten gold medals in eleven major international events. She also won six consecutive European Championships. This feat equaled the record set by Sonja Henie.

One of her most famous moments occurred at the 1988 Calgary Olympics. This event featured a rivalry known as the "Battle of the Carmens." Both Witt and the American skater Debi Thomas chose music from Bizet's opera, Carmen. They competed fiercely for the top spots. Witt won the short program, but she was third after the compulsory figures. In the long program, she landed four triple jumps. She successfully defended her title to become a two-time Olympic champion.
