Tokayev's career began with a lot of study and travel. He was born in 1953 in the city of Alma-Ata. His father was a famous writer named Kemel Tokayev. In 1970, Tokayev went to study in Moscow. He studied Mandarin, which is a language used in China. Later, he went to training schools in Beijing. After he graduated in 1975, he worked for the Soviet Ministry of Foreign Affairs. He even worked at an embassy in Singapore. This training helped him understand how the world works.

One of Tokayev's most important tasks was about nuclear weapons. Nuclear weapons are very powerful and dangerous tools. Tokayev worked hard to help stop their use. He helped sign treaties like the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty in 1996. He also worked on a treaty for a nuclear-free zone in Central Asia.

In 1970, Tokayev enrolled at the Moscow State Institute of International Relations. There, he studied Mandarin, the language used in China. He also attended the Beijing Language Institute for training. After graduating in 1975, he joined the Soviet Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Under his leadership, the economy saw significant growth. In 2001, the GDP expanded by 13.5 percent. He also helped reduce inflation by 11.2 percent.
