The Kashmir Valley is a wide place in the north. It sits in the Indian subcontinent. Big mountain ranges surround the valley. The Great Himalayas are in the northeast. The Pir Panjal Range is in the south and west. These mountains separate the valley from the Tibetan Plateau and the Punjab Plain.

A large river called the Jhelum flows through the land. It starts at Verinag. Many other rivers and streams feed into it. The Jhelum flows into Wular Lake. This is the second largest freshwater lake in Asia. The city of Srinagar sits on the banks of the river. Many people live here because the land is flat and fertile.

The weather in the valley changes with the seasons. Summers are mild and fairly dry. July is the hottest month. Winters are very cold. December and January are the coldest months. It can get very snowy. In 2012, a big winter storm covered the valley in ice. The weather can be hard to predict. Recent years have seen more rain and humidity. This may be due to new projects to plant more trees.
