It serves as the capital for the province, the county, and the district. The city is part of a larger region that includes rugged mountains. Most of the county is made of this rocky land. However, the urban area of Karaj is quite large. It is the fourth-largest urban area in the whole country. This follows the cities of Tehran, Mashhad, and Isfahan. Because it welcomes so many new people, it is often called "Little Iran."

The city has a very special climate. It feels a bit cooler than the nearby city of Tehran. This is because of many trees, rivers, and green plains. The city also gets about 250 mm of rain every year. This pattern is similar to a Mediterranean climate. There are also many beautiful open spaces for people to visit. You can explore places like Iranimzan Park or the Tulip Garden of Gachsâr. These green areas help make the city feel fresh and lively.

History has shaped Karaj for thousands of years. People lived in this area during the Bronze Age at Tepe Khurvin. Later, sites like Kalak show people lived here during the Iron Age. The city grew much more under the Safavid and Qajar empires. For example, the Shah-Abbasi Caravansary was built during the Safavid era. This was a place for travelers to rest. In 1810, a prince built the Soleymaniyeh Palace as a summer resort. It once had four towers and beautiful gardens.

The climate in Karaj is quite distinct. It is a bit cooler than the nearby city of Tehran. The city uses a cold semi-arid climate classification. This is known as the Köppen-Geiger BSk system. It receives about 250 mm of rain every year. This precipitation pattern is similar to a Mediterranean climate. Natural resources like trees and rivers help shape this environment.

Industrial development changed the city in the 20th century. In the 1930s, planners wanted a large industrial complex. They planned a "Model Town" for steel mills. This would use water and coal from the Alborz mountains. However, the project failed because of World War II. British forces impounded the necessary German equipment in 1940. Later, in the 1960s, Mohammad-Sadeq Fateh built Shahrak-e Jahanshahr. This was the first private industrial complex in Karaj. It included factories for tea, oil, and textiles. This industrial zone is very important today. It holds a 20% share of the national GDP.

The economy relies heavily on proximity to Tehran. Karaj helps transport products between Tehran and the Caspian Sea. The city produces chemicals and fertilizers. It also produces processed agricultural goods. One special area is the Payam Special Economic Zone. This zone is located near Payam International Airport.
