Kara Mustafa Pasha was a powerful nobleman and military leader in the Ottoman Empire.

He served as the Grand Vizier, which was one of the highest administrative roles in the government. His leadership was central to the empire's efforts to expand into Central and Eastern Europe. He lived from approximately 1634 or 1635 until his death in 1683. His career is defined by both significant military victories and a massive defeat that changed European history.

Mustafa's rise to power began through his connection to the influential Köprülü family. Although he was of Turkish origin, he was raised by this Albanian family. He started with smaller roles within their household, known as the enderun. He served as a telhisci, or assistant to the grand vizier, and as a silahdar, which means an armourer. He later became a mirahor-i-sani, or second master of the horse, for the Sultan. These positions helped him build the political connections necessary for high office.

His political reputation varied greatly depending on who was observing him. European observers often had a negative view of his leadership. Some described him as greedy, cruel, or an oppressor due to the heavy taxes he imposed. Between 1676 and 1683, he collected a large amount of avanias, which were special taxes. However, some historians suggest these views might not be entirely fair. He worked hard to keep the House of Osman supreme within its own territories. This often caused him to clash with ambitious foreign ministers.

Mustafa achieved several major military successes before his final campaign. In 1659, he became a governor in Silistria. He later served as a commander in a war against Poland. In 1676, he negotiated a settlement with the Polish leader John Sobieski. This agreement added the province of Podolia to the Ottoman Empire. This victory allowed the Ottomans to turn Cossack regions in the southern Russian Empire into a protectorate.

Following the death of his brother-in-law, Köprülüzade Fazıl Ahmed Pasha, in 1676, Mustafa became the Grand Vizier. He continued his military work by leading campaigns into the Tsardom of Russia. He successfully captured the traditional Cossack capital, Chyhyryn, which had been under Russian control. He also conquered the powerful fortress of Kaniv by siege. During a battle on the Dnieper River in August, his commanders urged a retreat. This led to a situation where neither side achieved a decisive victory.

In 1683, Mustafa launched a massive campaign to expand the empire into Austria.

He led an army of roughly 100,000 men to besiege the city of Vienna. At the time, the city was defended by 10,000 Habsburg soldiers. By mid-September, the Ottoman forces had breached portions of the city walls. However, on 12 September 1683, King John III Sobieski led a Polish army to the city. The Polish Winged Hussars launched a devastating flank attack. This victory at the Battle of Vienna forced an Ottoman retreat into Hungary.

The failure at Vienna resulted in the loss of Mustafa's position and his life. He was executed in Belgrade on 25 December 1683, by order of Sultan Mehmed IV. In accordance with Ottoman custom for high-ranking officials, he was executed by strangulation with a silk cord.

His final recorded words were, "Am I to die?" and "As God pleases."

Today, the legacy of Kara Mustafa Pasha remains a subject of historical debate. Some historians view him as a reckless commander, while others see him as a capable tactician. Even Kemal Atatürk spoke in his favor, noting the massive scale of moving 173,000 men to the heart of Europe. His impact is still visible in Turkey, where his birthplace was renamed Karamustafapaşa. He also established one of the largest charitable foundations in the empire, which was managed by his descendants for centuries.
