Travel and exposure to the West changed his political views. In 1879, he visited the prosperous city of Hong Kong. This trip sparked a deep interest in Western culture. Later, he purchased many Western books while in Shanghai. He was specifically influenced by Protestant Christianity. These ideas helped him form a new political ideology. He founded the Society for the Study of National Strengthening in Beijing.

In 1895, China lost the First Sino-Japanese War to Japan. This defeat led to the Gongche Shangshu movement. Kang and over 600 candidates signed a petition to the Guangxu Emperor. This event marked the start of mass political movements in China. In 1898, Kang and his student Liang Qichao led the Hundred Days' Reform. They attempted to implement radical changes in the government. They even tried to turn unused religious temples into schools.

The reforms were cut short by a coup led by Empress Dowager Cixi. She placed the Guangxu Emperor under house arrest. She also ordered the arrest and execution of Kang Youwei. To survive, Kang was forced to flee the country. He later organized the Protect the Emperor Society. This group worked to support the Emperor's cause abroad. He argued for one-year marriage contracts to increase women's independence.

However, his utopian vision included very controversial and harmful ideas. Kang proposed a eugenics program to shape future generations. He believed in creating a homogeneous human race. His plan involved forced relocations and sterilization. He held views that suggested certain racial phenotypes were superior. These ideas were deeply tied to his belief in a unified world order. His reputation shifted from a radical icon to an outdated figure.

He spent much of his later life traveling and promoting his theories. His work remains a complex study of reform and utopia. He remains a significant figure in the history of Chinese political thought.
