A queen lived in Korea a long time ago.

The queen wanted to help her land. She helped the army and the government. She wanted to use new ways to help.
Some people did not like her ideas. They wanted to keep things the old way. This caused many problems for the queen.
Something very sad happened to her at the palace. Many people were upset by this. They held big protests to show they cared.
Later, her husband made her a great empress. People still remember her today.
Empress Myeongseong was a leader in Korea.
In 1866, she married King Gojong. He was the 26th king of Joseon. At first, the king's father helped rule. He wanted to keep Korea away from other lands. This was called isolation. But the queen had different ideas. She wanted to use help from China and the West. She worked to make the army and the government better.
As time went on, things got hard. Japan wanted to grow its power. The Japanese government saw the queen as a problem. In 1895, a group of men attacked the palace. They killed the queen. This was a very sad and violent event.
Many people were very angry about her death. They held large protests. Later, King Gojong started the Korean Empire. He gave his wife the title of Empress Myeongseong.
Empress Myeongseong was a very important leader in Korean history.
Her life was full of many different roles and duties.
As queen, she took a very active part in ruling.
However, her work led to many difficult conflicts with other nations. In the 1880s and 1890s, relations with Japan became very bad. The Japanese government saw the queen as an obstacle to their growth. In 1895, a group of men attacked the Gyeongbokgung Palace. These men were part of a group called ronin. They were sent to assassinate the queen on 8 October 1895. This sad event caused great anger all over the country.
Her death changed the way people thought about their identity.
Empress Myeongseong was a central political figure in late 19th-century Korea.
Her path to power began with a strategic marriage in 1866.
Politics in the Joseon court were often divided by competing clans.
From 1873 until 1895, the Queen oversaw vital national improvements. She focused on economic, military, and governmental modernization. Her influence grew as she worked to strengthen the state's infrastructure. By the 1880s and 1890s, the political climate became increasingly volatile. Relations between Joseon and neighboring Japan began to deteriorate rapidly. The Meiji government of Japan viewed the Queen as a major obstacle. They believed her influence hindered their planned overseas expansion. This tension created a dangerous environment for the Korean leadership.
Conflict reached a breaking point in October 1895.
In the aftermath of her death, the Japanese-backed cabinet attempted to impose new rules.
King Gojong eventually reclaimed his authority and changed the nation's status. In October 1897, he moved to Gyeongungung, now known as Deoksugung. There, he proclaimed the founding of the Korean Empire. This act raised the status of his deceased wife to Empress. Her legacy remains tied to the struggle for Korean sovereignty. She represents the difficult choices faced by leaders during the era of global imperial expansion. Her life connects the traditional Joseon era to the modern Korean Empire.
