The downtown area is situated to the west of Kōriyama Station. This central location makes the city a natural meeting point for the surrounding regions.

Kōriyama's climate follows a humid subtropical pattern, known scientifically as Köppen Cfa. This means the city experiences hot, wet summers and cool, quite dry winters. August is typically the warmest month of the year. January is usually the coldest month. September is recorded as the month with the highest average rainfall. These seasonal shifts influence the daily life and environment of the city residents.

The history of Kōriyama began during the Nara period. At that time, it served as a regional governmental center on the frontier of Yamato settlement. During the Heian and Kamakura periods, the land became shōen, or private estates, controlled by samurai clans. In the Edo period, Kōriyama thrived as a post town. This success was due to its role as a crucial traffic focal point. It was part of the territory belonging to the Nihonmatsu Domain.

Modern development changed the city's character significantly during the Meiji period. In 1889, the town of Kōriyama was established within the Asaka District. Many dispossessed samurai were given undeveloped land to reclaim. This led to population growth and turned the region into an agricultural center. The availability of hydroelectric power also encouraged the growth of local industry. Kōriyama officially gained city status on September 1, 1924, after annexing Odawara Village.

During the 1930s, Kōriyama became a center for producing military equipment. This industrial focus made it a target for American bombers during World War II. The city suffered through three large-scale air raids during the conflict. In more recent history, the city faced the effects of the 2011 Great East Japan Earthquake. While Kōriyama was outside the mandatory evacuation zone for the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear disaster, many people relocated there from the affected areas. This movement helped the city continue to grow.

Today, Kōriyama is a massive transportation nexus for the Tōhoku region. It connects several major railway lines and expressways. Kōriyama Station serves as the central hub for these connections. Although it is a major transit point, the city does not have its own airport. The population has seen steady increases over the last 60 years. Currently, the city has an estimated 321,938 residents living in 141,760 households. This results in a population density of 425 persons per square kilometer.
