Narayanan's early life was defined by significant economic hardship and determination. He was born on October 27, 1920, in the village of Uzhavoor within the princely state of Travancore. He was the fourth of seven children born to Paappiyamma and Kocheril Raman Vaidyar. His father practiced Ayurveda, which is a traditional Indian medical system. The family belonged to the Paravar caste, which is often involved in fishing and sea trade. Because the family was poor, Narayanan faced many obstacles during his education. He walked 15 kilometers every day to attend school. Sometimes, he could not afford the tuition fees. During these times, he would stand outside the classroom to listen to the lessons.

Narayanan eventually completed his intermediate studies at C. M. S. College in Kottayam with a royal scholarship. He then earned both a B.A. (Honors) and an M.A. in English literature from the University of Travancore. He stood first in his university, becoming the first Dalit to earn a first-class degree there. After returning to India in 1948, Narayanan began a highly successful diplomatic career. He joined the Indian Foreign Service in 1949 at the request of Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru. Nehru famously referred to him as the best diplomat in the country. Narayanan served in various capacities in cities such as Tokyo, London, Canberra, and Hanoi. He later served as the Ambassador to Thailand and Turkey. He also served as the Ambassador to the People's Republic of China. This was a very important role because it was the first high-level posting to China after the 1962 Sino-Indian War. Narayanan was a scholar of Chinese culture and could speak the language fluently.

Narayanan's career also included significant roles in domestic politics and academia. He served as the Vice-Chancellor of Jawaharlal Nehru University from 1979 to 1980. He later entered politics at the request of Indira Gandhi. He won three successive elections to the Lok Sabha, which is the lower house of India's Parliament. As President, Narayanan was characterized as an assertive and independent leader. He described his style as a "working president." He aimed to work within the "four corners of the Constitution." This meant he occupied a position between an executive president with direct power and a "rubber-stamp president" who only approves decisions. He used his discretionary powers to set new precedents. For example, he helped appoint a prime minister during a hung Parliament. He also used his authority during the Kargil conflict. In 1998, he became the first Indian president to cast a vote while in office during a general election.

Because she was a foreign national, they required special permission from Nehru to marry. She became an Indian citizen and took the name Usha Narayanan. Usha was active in social welfare and became the first woman of foreign origin to serve as First Lady of India. They had two daughters, Chitra and Amrita. Chitra Narayanan eventually followed in her father's footsteps as an Indian ambassador. Narayanan passed away on November 9, 2005, leaving a lasting legacy in Indian history.
