The city grew into three different towns. These were called Altstadt, Löbenicht, and Kneiphof. Kneiphof sat on an island in the Pregolya River. It was also a place where kings were crowned. From 1701, it served as the coronation city for the Prussian monarchy. Even though the capital was in Berlin, the kings still came to Königsberg for special ceremonies.

War changed the city forever in the 1940s. During World War II, the city was hit by heavy bombing.

The city's history involved many changing rulers. In 1454, the city joined a rebellion against the Teutonic Knights. The members of the Prussian Confederation asked the Polish king to take control. This led to the Thirteen Years' War.

After the war, the city became a fief of the Kingdom of Poland. Later, it became the capital of the Duchy of Prussia. From 1701, it served as the coronation city for the Prussian monarchy.

Königsberg was a massive center for culture and printing. It was home to the Albertina University, founded in 1544.

In early 1945, the Red Army fought the Battle of Königsberg. The Soviet Union annexed the territory on 9 April 1945. The Potsdam Agreement placed the area under Soviet administration. The German population was expelled. Most new residents came from Russia, Ukraine, and Belarus.

In 1946, the Soviet government renamed the city Kaliningrad. This name honored the Soviet leader Mikhail Kalinin. The government also demolished much of the historic center.

In 1990, Germany officially renounced all claims to the city. This was part of the Final Settlement treaty. Today, Kaliningrad remains the capital of the Kaliningrad Oblast. It continues to be a significant geographical point between Europe and Russia.
