Justinian I was a powerful Roman emperor.

He wanted to grow his empire. His generals, like Belisarius, won back many lands. They took back parts of North Africa and Italy.
Justinian also changed the law. He made a big set of rules called the Corpus Juris Civilis. These laws helped protect women and children. They also gave slaves more rights. Many countries still use his ideas for their laws today. He was also a great builder. He helped make the Hagia Sophia, a grand church. Justinian married Theodora, who was a very influential leader. He died in 565.
Justinian I was a very important Roman emperor.

Justinian had big goals for his empire. He wanted to win back lands that used to belong to the Roman Empire. He used talented generals like Belisarius and Narses to lead his armies. They won back North Africa from the Vandal Kingdom. They also took back Italy, Sicily, and parts of Dalmatia.
Justinian was known for working very hard. Some people even called him "the emperor who never sleeps."
One of his greatest jobs was fixing the law.
These laws changed how people lived together. They gave more rights to women and children. For example, the laws helped protect women from being treated unfairly. They also gave slaves the right to ask for their freedom.
Justinian I was a powerful Roman emperor who ruled from 527 to 565. He is often called Justinian the Great because of his massive influence on history.
Justinian’s rise to power began with his family connections. He was born around 482 in Tauresium, a place near modern-day Serbia or North Macedonia.
To achieve his goal of reconquest, Justinian relied on brilliant military leaders. His general, Belisarius, led successful campaigns to take the Vandal Kingdom in North Africa.

Justinian was a man of intense energy and complex personal life. He was nicknamed "the emperor who never sleeps" because of his constant work. He married Theodora, an actress who was about twenty years younger than him.
Perhaps his most lasting achievement was the complete rewriting of Roman law.
These legal reforms had a profound impact on how society functioned. The laws provided new protections for vulnerable groups of people. For example, new rules helped protect women from exploitation and ensured widows received their dowries. The laws also showed more concern for the rights of children, especially those who were abandoned. Justinian even changed how slavery worked by allowing slaves to plead for their own freedom. He famously stated that slavery was an unnatural state for humans. However, the law still treated slaves as property, even while acknowledging they were individuals.
Today, the legacy of Justinian’s legal work is still visible across the globe. The Corpus Juris Civilis became the foundation for Byzantine law and later influenced Western Europe. In the 12th century, these legal ideas spread to the rest of the continent. Eventually, they were carried to the Americas and other parts of the world during the Age of Discovery. Many modern civil law systems are still based on the principles Justinian and Tribonian organized over 1,500 years ago. His reign connected the ancient Roman past to the legal structures of the modern world.
