Section Sabina is the largest, containing about 60 species with various colored seed cones. A 2022 classification of gymnosperms updated this by recognizing these sections as three separate genera: Arceuthos, Sabina, and Juniperus sensu stricto. 
The survival of juniper seeds relies on their specialized anatomy. Each seed is protected by an impermeable coat that prevents water from entering. This hard shell protects the embryo and can cause long periods of dormancy. This dormancy is often broken only when the seed coat is physically damaged. This damage frequently occurs when frugivores or mammals swallow the seeds whole. The tough coat allows the seeds to pass through a digestive system without being destroyed. This process enables the seeds to be dispersed over long distances.
Junipers have significant ecological and human connections. In the western United States, junipers can expand into open areas, which changes the local ecosystem.
