The Junggar Basin is a massive area in Northwest China.

It is located in a region called Dzungaria. High mountains wrap around the basin like a giant bowl. The Tarbagatai Mountains sit in the northwest. The Altai Mountains are in the northeast. To the south, you will find the Heavenly Mountains. This basin is very special to scientists who study the Earth. It is one of the largest sedimentary basins in the country.

Most of the basin is filled with sedimentary rocks. These are rocks formed from layers of sand, mud, and silt. These layers sit on top of much older basement rocks. These basement rocks formed a long time ago during the time of the supercontinent Pangea. The basin grew as a series of foreland basins. A foreland basin is a low area that forms in front of growing mountains. Over millions of years, these layers piled up very high. In some parts, the layers are 5,000 meters thick.

The history of this place involves many moving pieces of the Earth. Long ago, several large plates like the Tarim and Siberian plates moved toward each other. They collided and trapped oceans between them. This movement created volcanic arcs and folded the land. Eventually, these plates joined together to form a stable part of the Eurasian plate. This process helped build the foundation of the basin we see today.

The weather in the basin has changed a lot over time. During the Mesozoic era, the area had many rivers and lakes. The climate was humid and wet for a long time. Later, the climate became arid, which means it became very dry. This happened because the supercontinent Pangea began to break apart. As the land changed, the big monsoon winds stopped reaching the area. This left the basin with much less moisture from the sea.

Because of all this moving earth and changing water, the basin is very rich. It contains many geological resources like petroleum and coal. It also has many ore deposits, which are useful metals. These resources formed due to volcanic activity and the way sediment settled. The basin is also famous for being very far from the ocean. It is the land location most remote from an open sea. It sits 2,648 km away from the nearest coast.
