Julius Kambarage Nyerere was a Tanzanian politician and a major anti-colonial activist.
Nyerere was born on 13 April 1922 in Butiama, located in the British colony of Tanganyika.
His higher education took him far beyond the borders of Tanganyika.

Nyerere's political journey began in earnest when he helped form TANU. The Tanganyika African National Union was a party created in 1954 to campaign for independence.
As president, Nyerere focused on a philosophy called Ujamaa.
Nyerere's leadership extended into international conflicts and regional politics. He provided training and aid to groups fighting against white-minority rule in southern Africa. He also oversaw the 1978–1979 war between Tanzania and Uganda.
Nyerere stepped down from the presidency in 1985. He was succeeded by Ali Hassan Mwinyi, who began reversing many of Nyerere's policies. Even after leaving office, Nyerere remained active in politics. He stayed as the chair of Chama Cha Mapinduzi until 1990. During this time, he supported the transition to a multi-party system. He also served as a mediator to help end the Burundian Civil War. In Tanzania, he is still deeply respected and called the "Father of the Nation." His life remains a central part of African history.
