Julida is a large order of millipedes.

These many-legged creatures are part of the animal kingdom. They are mostly small and have cylindrical bodies. This means their bodies are shaped like long, thin tubes. Most members of this group are quite tiny. They live in many different environments across the globe. Understanding them helps us learn about the diversity of life.

Many Julida possess unique physical traits. Their bodies are built for specific movements. Some species have eyes to help them sense light. Other species have no eyes at all. In many species, the males have very specialized anatomy. The first pair of legs on a mature male is often modified. These legs look like small, hook-like structures. Additionally, males have special legs called gonopods. These gonopods are located on the 7th body segment. These structures serve specific biological roles for the male.

Scientists organize Julida into many different groups. These groups are called superfamilies and families. There are many ways to classify these millipedes. For example, the superfamily Juloidea includes the family Julidae. Another group is the Blaniuloidea, which contains the Blaniulidae family. There are also many members in the Nemasomatoidea superfamily. This superfamily includes families like Nemasomatidae and Pseudonemasomatidae. Each group is defined by specific scientific characteristics.

Taxonomy, or the naming of life, has evolved over a long time. Many researchers have contributed to our knowledge of Julida. In 1814, Leach named the Juloidea and Julidae groups. C. L. Koch provided names in 1847 for the Blaniuloidea. Later, researchers like Verhoeff and Loomis added more names. In 1926, Attems named the Rhopaloiulidae. More recently, Enghoff named several groups in 1991. These names help scientists track the history of discovery.

There is a vast amount of variety within this order. Scientists estimate there are approximately 750 different species of Julida.

This large number shows how successful they are. They are found in many different climates. Most species prefer temperate regions. These are areas with moderate temperatures. However, their range is incredibly wide. They live in many places across the planet.

Their distribution covers many continents and regions. You can find Julida in North America and Panama. They are also common throughout Europe. In Asia, they live in areas north of the Himalayas. Some species live in the Asir region of Saudi Arabia. They are also found in Southeast Asia. This wide range shows they can adapt to different homes.

From mountains to tropical zones, they exist in many spots.

Julida belongs to a larger biological system. They are part of the millipede orders. The study of these creatures connects to many scientific fields. Understanding their body parts helps biologists study evolution. Looking at their different families helps experts understand classification.
