He was born in Auxerre, Burgundy, in 1768. His father was a tailor. Sadly, Fourier became an orphan when he was only nine years old. He was educated by the Benedictine Order at the Convent of St. Mark. Later in life, he became a professor at the École Polytechnique. He even traveled to Egypt with Napoleon Bonaparte in 1798.

Fourier is best known for his amazing work with heat. He wanted to understand how heat moves through solid objects. He wrote a very important book called The Analytical Theory of Heat in 1822. Fourier's life was deeply connected to the era of Napoleon Bonaparte. In 1798, he joined Napoleon's Egyptian expedition as a scientific adviser. During this time, he served as the secretary of the Institut d'Égypte in Cairo. While the British fleet cut off the French from their home country, Fourier organized workshops to produce munitions for the army. After the French forces surrendered in 1801, he returned to France. Napoleon later appointed him as the Prefect, or Governor, of the Department of Isère in Grenoble. In this role, he managed significant public works, such as road construction.

Fourier is most famous for his groundbreaking research into how heat moves through solid objects. In 1822, he published his major treatise, *Théorie analytique de la chaleur* (The Analytical Theory of Heat). He based his theories on Newton's law of cooling. This law states that heat flows between two particles based on their temperature difference. Fourier proposed a partial differential equation to describe this conductive diffusion. Today, this is known as the heat equation. It is a fundamental example of a parabolic partial differential equation taught to physics students everywhere.

Beyond physics, Fourier made massive contributions to the field of mathematics. He proposed that any function, whether continuous or discontinuous, could be expanded into a series of sines. A sine wave is a specific type of repeating mathematical pattern. While his original claim required more specific conditions to be perfectly accurate, it was a massive breakthrough. This discovery laid the foundation for Fourier analysis and harmonic analysis. These tools allow scientists to study complex vibrations and signals. This work eventually led to the development of the Fourier transform.

Fourier also introduced important concepts regarding how mathematical equations are structured. He contributed to the idea of dimensional homogeneity. This principle states that an equation is only formally correct if the dimensions match on both sides of the equals sign. This is a vital part of dimensional analysis used in science. Additionally, his study of heat diffusion in cylinders helped inspire the Sturm–Liouville theory. He also discussed Bessel functions many years before Friedrich Wilhelm Bessel became famous for them. His mathematical work also included studies on the real roots of polynomials.

In the 1820s, Fourier turned his attention to the temperature of the Earth. He noticed a strange discrepancy in his calculations. Based on the Sun's radiation, the Earth should have been much colder than it actually is. There was a 33-degree difference between his calculated temperature and the observed temperature. To explain this, he looked at how the atmosphere might act as an insulator. He referenced an experiment by Horace Bénédict de Saussure involving glass panes and air. Fourier suggested that atmospheric gases could act like these glass panes to trap heat. This was the first proposal of what we now call the greenhouse effect.

Fourier's legacy is preserved in many ways across the world. He died in his bed on May 16, 1830, after a period of declining health. He is buried in the Père Lachaise Cemetery in Paris.
