He is widely regarded as one of the greatest masters of the English language. Interestingly, Conrad did not speak English fluently until his twenties. He maintained a strong foreign accent throughout his life. Despite this, he became a master prose stylist. He brought a unique, non-English sensibility to English literature. His works often explore the crises of human individuality. These stories frequently take place in an indifferent or amoral world.

Conrad's writing style is complex and difficult to categorize. Some critics view him as a literary impressionist. Others classify him as an early modernist. His stories also contain elements of 19th-century realism. He often used anti-heroic characters to drive his narratives.

A notable example of this is his character in the novel Lord Jim. His unique narrative style has influenced many later authors. Furthermore, many dramatic films have been inspired by his books. Many critics believe his works anticipated later world events. His writing reflects a European-dominated world, including themes of imperialism and colonialism.

Conrad's early life was shaped by intense political and personal struggles. He was born Józef Teodor Konrad Korzeniowski on 3 December 1857.

He was born in Berdychiv, which was then part of the Russian Empire. His father, Apollo Korzeniowski, was a writer and a political activist.

His father was a member of the "Red" political faction. This group wanted to re-establish Poland's former boundaries. They also advocated for land reform and the abolition of serfdom.

His childhood involved many difficult transitions and losses. Because of his father's activism, the family moved frequently. In 1862, the family was exiled to Vologda, north of Moscow.

The climate there was known to be very bad. In 1865, his mother, Ewa Bobrowska, died of tuberculosis. Later, in May 1869, his father also died from tuberculosis.

He worked on French merchant ships for several years. In April 1878, he joined the British merchant marine. He spent the next fifteen years serving under the Red Ensign. Conrad worked his way up through many different ranks. He served as a steward, an apprentice, and an able seaman. He also worked as a third, second, and first mate.

One of his most significant roles was as a captain. In 1888, he commanded the barque Otago. He sailed this vessel from Sydney to Mauritius. His time in the merchant navy gave him a deep understanding of the sea. This knowledge allowed him to write about maritime life with great realism. His experiences in the French and British navies helped him explore the human psyche.

Conrad's life connects the history of Poland to the literature of Britain. He grew up immersed in Polish Romantic poetry. He often cited poets like Mickiewicz and Słowacki as major influences.

His work reflects the tensions of growing up in a partitioned Poland. His native land was divided among Prussia, Austria, and Russia. This background gave him a distinctive worldview. He used his English writing to process these complex European experiences. His legacy remains a vital part of world literature today.
