He was born in March 1743. His Mohawk name was Thayendanegea. This name means "He places two bets together." He was born in the Ohio Country. His family traveled from the Mohawk homeland in New York. He belonged to the Wolf Clan. In Mohawk culture, women held much power. Clan mothers chose the male leaders.

Brant grew up in a world with many languages. He lived near people from Germany, Scotland, and Ireland. He learned to speak Mohawk, English, and German. This helped him talk to many different people. His mother, Margaret, was a successful businesswoman. She sold ginseng to merchants. This plant was very important in Europe for medicine. Through this work, her family met William Johnson. Johnson was a powerful British official.

Brant spent his youth hunting and fishing. He was known for being very kind and charming. He even visited the homes of settlers. He would share deer meat with them. This helped him build many friendships. These connections helped him become a leader. He was not born into a leadership role. Instead, he earned it through his many skills.

Later, the American Revolutionary War began. Brant led a group called Brant's Volunteers. They fought with the British on the New York frontier. Some Americans were very angry with him. They even gave him the mean nickname "Monster Brant."

After the war, Brant worked to help his people. They had lost their land in New York. In 1784, Governor Frederick Haldimand gave them new land. This land was near the Grand River in Ontario. It was about 12 miles wide. Brant moved many Iroquois people to this new area. This place is now called the Six Nations Reserve. He remained a great leader until he died in 1807.
