The transition from Goryeo to Joseon involved complex political shifts. In the late 14th century, the Goryeo dynasty was weakening. Wars involving the Yuan and Ming dynasties caused great instability. General Yi Sŏnggye led a military attack during a political crisis. He later initiated a coup d'état to overthrow the existing king. In 1392, Yi became the first king, known as Taejo.

Early Joseon faced internal struggles known as the Strife of Princes. These were violent conflicts over who would succeed the throne. The first strife occurred in 1398 when Yi Pangwŏn killed his rivals. He sought to establish an absolute monarchy ruled by the king. This was different from the vision of scholar Chŏng Tojŏn. Chŏng wanted a government led by ministers rather than just a king.

After the second strife in 1400, Yi Pangwŏn became King Taejong.

King Taejong worked to consolidate royal power through several key reforms. He abolished the right of nobles to maintain private armies. This allowed the national military to grow much larger. He also revised land taxation laws to increase national income. Taejong replaced old government councils with the State Council of Joseon. This new branch of administration revolved around the king's direct edicts. He even created the Sinmun Office to help subjects facing injustice.

King Sejong the Great is remembered as one of Korea's greatest rulers. He ascended the throne in 1418 and focused on many advancements. He protected the borders from coastal pirates and northern groups. In 1443, he oversaw the creation of Hangul, the Korean alphabet.

This new writing system was much easier to learn than Chinese characters. During his reign, science, agriculture, and medicine also made great strides. Sejong's era is considered a golden age of Korean culture.

Despite its successes, Joseon faced severe external threats later on. Japanese invasions occurred between 1592 and 1598. These conflicts severely weakened the kingdom's strength and resources. Later, the Later Jin and Qing dynasties invaded from the north. In response to these pressures, Joseon adopted an isolationist policy. This policy made the country known as the "hermit kingdom" in Western literature. The kingdom experienced a long period of peace following these invasions.

In the late 19th century, the kingdom began to decline rapidly. It faced internal rebellions and intense international pressure. This period of instability ended in 1897 when the Korean Empire began.
