He wrote articles for many newspapers. One important pamphlet was titled "Political Imprisonment in Cuba." He wrote this to show the world how the Spanish government treated people in Cuba. In 1873, Martí hung the Cuban flag from his balcony in Madrid. This was a bold act of protest. He also responded to the proclamation of the First Spanish Republic. He argued that the new republic was being hypocritical. He believed it should grant independence to Cuba.
Martí continued his travels and his studies across different countries. 
Martí was a key organizer for the Cuban War of Independence. He helped design the Cuban Revolutionary Party. This party helped create the ideology for the fight against Spain. He worked hard to unite the Cuban community living in exile. This was especially important for the community in Florida. His leadership helped prepare the way for the war. Sadly, Martí did not live to see the end of the conflict. He died in military action on May 19, 1895. He fell during the Battle of Dos Ríos. His death became a powerful cry for independence. It motivated both revolutionaries and people who had been hesitant to fight.
Today, Martí's influence is seen in many places.
