He was born in 1906. Before he was a leader, he was a farmer. He grew coffee and made rope on his farm. He helped his workers by building homes for them. He even gave free milk to their children.

In 1948, a civil war broke out in Costa Rica. This was a sad and violent time. After the war, Figueres became the leader of the country. He made many big changes to help his people. He chose to end the country's army. He believed a country did not need soldiers to be safe. This helped Costa Rica stay peaceful for a long time.

Figueres also worked to make things fairer. He gave women the right to vote. He also gave the right to vote to Afro-Costa Ricans. He made sure children could go to school. He served as president three different times. He is still seen as a very important person in his country's history.
