He writes long novels, short stories, and essays. Lethem is known for something called "genre bending." This means he mixes different styles of storytelling together. For example, his first book combined detective mysteries with science fiction.

He likes to explore how different worlds and ideas can meet. This makes his books feel very unique and exciting to read.

Lethem's writing often comes from his own life and interests. He grew up in Brooklyn, New York, in a place called Gowanus. His father was an artist who painted many different things. His mother was an activist who worked for political causes. When he was thirteen, his mother died from a brain tumor. This sad event changed his life and his writing.

His career began with a very big success in 1994. His first novel was titled "Gun, with Occasional Music." It featured many strange things like talking kangaroos and futuristic prisons. The book was a finalist for the Nebula Award. Later, he wrote "Motherless Brooklyn," which was published in 1999. This book became very famous and won the National Book Critics Circle Award. It tells the story of a detective named Lionel Essrog. Lionel has Tourette's syndrome and is very interested in language.

Lethem has received many important honors for his hard work. In 2003, his book "The Fortress of Solitude" became a New York Times Best Seller. This book is about growing up in Brooklyn during the 1970s. In 2005, he was given a MacArthur Fellowship. This is a special award for people who do amazing work.

In 2025, he also won a Guggenheim Fellowship. This honor is for great artists and scholars in the arts.

Today, Lethem continues to share his love of words with others. Since 2011, he has taught creative writing at Pomona College. He spent many years living in California before moving back to New York. While living there, he worked in used bookstores to support himself. He also spent time traveling across the country by hitchhiking. These many experiences help him create his wonderful stories. He remains a very important voice in modern literature.
