This ethnic group later became Savimbi's largest base of political support. He was a very dedicated student. He attended both Protestant and Roman Catholic schools. At age 24, he received a scholarship to study medicine in Portugal. This education allowed him to meet other students who wanted to resist Portuguese colonial rule.

He studied social sciences and law at different universities. In 1960, he met Holden Roberto in Switzerland. Roberto was a leader in the National Liberation Front of Angola, or FNLA. Some fronts would attack, while others would pretend to retreat. He also used the rural peasantry for support. He focused heavily on mobilizing the Ovimbundu people. By 1989, UNITA controlled many areas of Angola. They were able to launch attacks near the capital city, Luanda. His military success made leaders in the Soviet Union very concerned.
